Lee and Julie Harris, the dynamic duo behind Holy Smokes, have long been recognized for their entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the Cloquet community. Since the exciting launch of Holy Smokes Coffeehouse and BBQ in 2023, housed in the historic Chief Theater, their journey has been one of continuous growth and innovation. Now, they are expanding their impact with a new venture: the Holy Smokes Commercial Kitchen Rental Space.
The idea stemmed from their own journey into commercial food production. When the Harris family moved from the countryside into Cloquet, they constructed a fully-equipped commercial kitchen in their 1101 Avenue B building to support their business. Recognizing the significant investment required to build such a facility—estimated at $175,000—they saw an opportunity to support other food entrepreneurs who face similar challenges.
A Space for Growth & Creativity
Access to a licensed commercial kitchen can be a major hurdle for small food businesses, caterers, and cottage bakers, particularly those selling at farmers' markets or needing expanded prep space. By offering their kitchen for rent, the Harris's provide an invaluable resource for local entrepreneurs.
“Allowing the commercial kitchen to be rented helps us generate some revenue towards our equipment investment, but more importantly, it helps us support other entrepreneurs and foster a culture of an authentic food network,” shared Julie Harris.
The Holy Smokes Commercial Kitchen Rental is a versatile space designed for efficiency and convenience. The facility includes:
Climate-controlled environment (heated and air-conditioned as needed)
Refrigerators
Stove and oven
Ample preparation space
Freezer storage
Roast-and-hold capabilities
Looking ahead, Lee Harris envisions adding lockers in the entry area for renters to store their equipment and seasonings, further enhancing the usability of the space.
“Our goal is to provide space for other small businesses to grow and flourish,” Lee Harris shared.
Expanding Opportunities
Beyond rentals for food businesses, the Harris's are exploring community education opportunities in the kitchen, including classes on topics like juicing and the art of smoking a brisket. These classes could provide both a learning experience and a way to strengthen the local food community.
For those interested in renting the space, available shifts will eventually be on their website. For the time being, potential renters can reach out to Lee Harris directly to discuss their specific needs.
With this latest venture, Holy Smokes continues to build on its reputation as a hub for great food and community collaboration. By opening their doors to other entrepreneurs, Lee and Julie Harris are ensuring that Cloquet’s food scene remains vibrant, innovative, and full of opportunity.
