Mater Dei Apostolate High School: A Unique Approach to Education in Cloquet

Updated: 2 days ago

Listen to Podcast Here: Mater Dei Apostolate High School

Mater Dei Apostolate High School in Cloquet is redefining education with a distinctive hybrid model that merges the flexibility of homeschooling with the structure of a conventional high school experience. Serving families across the region, Mater Dei provides an innovative and inclusive educational option rooted in intellectual rigor and spiritual growth.

A Vision for the Future

Founded in 2019 in Duluth at Holy Family Church, Mater Dei Apostolate High School expanded its reach in 2023 by relocating to Queen of Peace in Cloquet. This move addressed a significant need in the community, offering a unique high school option where no religious alternative previously existed. Volunteer Development Director Becca Kroll shared, “We wanted to start a high school that didn’t compete with other schools. Instead, we complement existing options.”

An Innovative Hybrid Model

Operating as a homeschool co-op, Mater Dei offers high school courses "a la carte" for homeschoolers. Students may enroll in a single course to supplement their education or opt for the full curriculum. The program follows the Kolbe Academy curriculum, emphasizing classical education with a modern approach to learning.

Classes run four days a week, with Fridays reserved for independent study and family time. The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m., with an optional daily Mass at 8 a.m. fostering spiritual enrichment.

Accessible and Affordable.

With tuition set at $250 per course plus book fees, Mater Dei ensures affordability. Families are encouraged to recruit monthly donors to assist with teacher compensation, reinforcing the school’s mission of accessibility for all.

Expert-Led Education

Mater Dei boasts a team of eight credentialed teachers, all professionals with bachelor’s degrees or higher in their respective fields. Local financial advisor Andy French teaches Finance and Life Skills, while Headmaster Brady Kamphenkel brings his expertise as a former English professor at the College of St. Scholastica. Small class sizes and personalized instruction allow students to thrive academically and personally.

A Culture of Inclusion and Excellence

Though rooted in Catholic theology, Mater Dei welcomes students of all religions and backgrounds. The curriculum focuses on teaching students how to think, not what to think, fostering critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Theology classes are extracurricular, allowing families to tailor their educational experience.

With a basic dress code of navy or white clothing and a nurturing, values-driven environment, Mater Dei cultivates discipline, independence, and community spirit. Subjects like math and science are taught at varying skill levels, while history and life skills courses encourage collaboration and real-world application.

Supporting Families and Strengthening Community

Mater Dei’s mission is clear: to create a Catholic cultural oasis while preparing students for higher education. “We help students rise to their potential and reinforce the role of parents as primary educators of their children,” says Kroll. The school’s holistic approach balances academic excellence, character formation, and spiritual growth, making it a standout choice for families in Cloquet and beyond.
