Since its grand opening in 2010, The Beach at Pinehurst Park has become a summer favorite for families and individuals in the Cloquet area. Originally developed after a city investment transformed a pond into a modern, sand-bottom swimming beach, The Beach offers a unique experience for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. With a zero-entry area perfect for young children, swim lanes for exercise, and a six-foot center depth, the beach caters to everyone, from toddlers to seasoned swimmers.

The facility’s inclusive design offers more than just a place to swim. Patrons enjoy a variety of amenities including changing rooms, kiddie slides, a sand volleyball court, shaded picnic areas, and rentable pavilions for birthday parties or special events. Visitors can also borrow sports equipment for use on nearby courts, making The Beach a hub for fun and recreation. With daily, group, and seasonal passes available—offering discounted pre-purchase options each spring—The Beach remains an accessible option for everyone.

Under the leadership of Cloquet Community Education, The Beach at Pinehurst Park is staffed by well-trained lifeguards, making safety a top priority. The facility follows American Red Cross safety guidelines, and life jackets are required for swimmers aged 11 and under, unless they pass a swim test. Cloquet Community Education also encourages teens interested in lifeguarding to pursue certification and join the summer team, which employed 22 lifeguards and 7 front desk staff this past season.

Erin Bates, Director, and Kim Miens, Aquatics Coordinator, shared that the facility recently partnered with the State of Minnesota through an aquatics grant. This partnership resulted in the distribution of 50 family beach passes and free swimming lessons for 150 low-income families, providing valuable water safety education worth $100 per recipient.

Visitors can bring their own food to the beach, with ice cream and vending options also available. However, The Beach operates on a “pack in, pack out” model to keep the facility clean, and specific items like glass, alcoholic beverages, and grills are prohibited.

The Beach at Pinehurst Park is more than a swimming destination—it's a community space that promotes outdoor fun, safety, and inclusivity for all who visit. Whether you're looking to swim, enjoy a game of volleyball, or simply relax by the water, this summer spot offers something for everyone.
